ARCH-1515 – Design Studio 2: Place II – Winter 2020
Building upon the previous studio, the study of PLACE continues to provide a focus for studies in the region of Greater Sudbury. Design skills, including measured drawing, comparative scales of different types of sites, and site modelling in detail are emphasized. The theme of place continues to be recorded and understood at a variety of scales, including the geology of Sudbury and the great lakes forest. Emphasis is on developing a complex understanding of the place we are in through case studies and design exercises that introduce the concept of place making within Sudbury and environs. As a winter exercise, students design and build an ice station to be hauled out upon Lake Ramsey.

ARCH-1515 – Atelier 2: Lieu II – Hiver 2020
S’appuyant sur le cours d’atelier précédent, l’étude du LIEU continue d’orienter les études axées sur la région du Grand Sudbury. Les compétences en conception, notamment la cotation de dessins, les échelles comparatives de différents types de sites et la modélisation de site en détail sont soulignées. Le thème de lieu continue d’être inscrit et compris à diverses échelles, y compris la géologie de Sudbury et la région forestière des Grands Lacs. L’accent est mis sur le développement d’une compréhension complexe du lieu où nous sommes au moyen d’études de cas et de travaux de conception mettant en avant le concept d’aménagement d’espace dans la Ville de Sudbury et les environs. Comme travaux d’hiver, les membres du corps étudiant conçoivent et construisent un abri de réchauffement à transporter sur le lac Ramsey.

EL: This assignment introduces a number of important issues in architecture. In teams, students have learnt to design and build a space in detail, and how to be resourceful and creative with materials and budgets.Through different design processes, each studio group has collaborated to produce one Ice Station design. During the fall semester, students design and build prototypes of their Ice Station, which is built at the beginning of the winter and installed on the skating path of Lake Ramsey in Sudbury. The five Ice Stations build by the students add up to form a community of huts, creating a social network around winter

FL : Travail 1: Construction des stations sur glace. Ce travail introduit un certain nombre de questions importantes dans le domaine de l’architecture. En équipe, les étudiants ont appris à concevoir et à construire un espace en détail, et à faire preuve d’ingéniosité et de créativité dans l’utilisation des matériaux et des budgets. Au cours du semestre d’automne, les étudiants conçoivent et construisent des prototypes de leur station sur la glace, qui est construite au début de l’hiver et installée sur la piste de patinage du lac Ramsey, à Sudbury. Les cinq stations sur la glace construites par les étudiants forment une communauté de pavillons, créant un réseau social centré sur l’hiver.

EL: This drawing exercise is an opportunity to document the threshold – the sequence of transition spaces between outside and inside – from one of the buildings visited in Toronto. It is possible to focus on different aspects of this transition, such as the approach to the site, light, temperature, sound, shapes or building materials. Our study trip to the city of Toronto offered an opportunity to study the relationship between the internal and external spaces of a building.

FL: Travail 1b: Dessiner le seuil. Cet exercice de dessin est l’occasion de documenter le seuil – la séquence d’espaces de transition entre le dehors et le dedans – à partir d’un des bâtiments visités à Toronto. Il est possible de se concentrer sur différents aspects de cette transition, comme la démarche sur le site, la lumière, la température, le son, les formes ou les matériaux de construction. Un voyage d’études à la ville de Toronto a été l’occasion d’étudier la relation entre les espaces internes et externes d’un bâtiment.

EL: In the final assignment of the semester, students are asked to apply the skills and concepts learned throughout the year toward the design of an Artist Workspace. The purpose is to begin exploring inhabitation (or dwelling). This is a fundamental step in architectural education through which students examine how form, structure, and materiality respond to, and inform, a dwelling’s location and it’s everyday use. For this assignment, students have chosen a site around a lake in Sudbury, analyzed the site conditions, selected an architectural program and building location, as well as developed a design process, a design method that results in an artist workspace.

FL: Travail 2 : Conception de bâtiment. Lors du dernier travail du semestre, les étudiants et étudiantes appliquent les compétences et les notions que vous avez apprises au cours de l’année pour la conception d’une résidence d’artiste. L’objectif principal est de réaliser une exploration de l’habitation (ou la demeure). Il s’agit d’une étape fondamentale de l’enseignement de l’architecture au travers de laquelle, on examine comment la forme, la structure et la matérialité répondent et informent de l’emplacement d’un espace de vie et de son utilisation quotidienne. Pour ce travail, les étudiants ont choisi et analysé un site au bord d’un lac à Sudbury. Ils ont élaboré un programme architectural et choisi l’emplacement de leurs bâtiments. Ensuite, ils ont développé un processus de conception permettant de créer le projet d’un atelier d’artiste.
